This article was written regarding work conducted under legacy company names: Continental Mapping, GISinc, or TSG Solutions. These three companies merged in January 2021 to form a new geospatial leader Axim Geospatial.
Challenge:
Honolulu Department of Environmental Services (ENV) located in Honolulu City and County, HI collects and treats about 110 million gallons of wastewater and provides curbside trash pickup and disposal. ENV was considering a migration to the ArcGIS Utility Network, but needed a firm understanding of how to get there.
Their concerns included:
- What would the effort require in terms of staff, resources, and infrastructure?
- Could the migration be completed solely in-house?
- Most importantly, what was the best plan forward?
Research and Solution:
Axim Geospatial performed a 3-day onsite Utility Network Readiness Assessment. While onsite, Axim and ENV stakeholders discussed topics to support the UN Migration including:
- Source data quality
- Compatibility of existing hardware and infrastructure with the UN
- Capability of internal team members to support the transition to and adoption of a UN
The findings of the UN Readiness Assessment were documented, and a Utility Network Implementation Roadmap was developed to support ENV’s migration to the Utility Network.
Results:
Axim Geospatial’s Readiness Assessment determined that ENV is well-positioned to make the transition from the Geometric Network to the Utility Network (GN-UN), supported by the following conclusions:
- Axim found all sewer data was well populated and ready for transition to the Utility Network. ENV’s Geometric Network data is robust, clean, and aligned to support the utility network.
- Axim evaluated the present technical environment including server configuration, virtualization, hardware specifications, and software versions of all affected components. Axim determined ENV follows Esri’s best practices and has an optimal server configuration to support the UN transition.
- Axim also determined that the existing technical team is eager and highly capable. Only foundational UN training should be needed to support the migration.
The GN-UN migration is highly complex and great care must be taken to ensure optimal outcomes. Adopting this technology is a major update from existing workflows and exacting planning, preparation, and support will help mitigate the inherent risks of this process. Axim prepared an Implementation Road Map with a custom summary and detailed steps for ENV to accomplish the migration goals and successfully leverage the robustness of the Utility Network.
