Health Catalyst uses GISĀ  to Optimize Service Area Boundaries

This article was written regarding work conducted under legacy company names: Continental Mapping, GISinc, or TSG Solutions. These three companies merged in January 2021 to form a new geospatial leader Axim Geospatial.

Health Catalyst is a leader in the ongoing healthcare transformation. Through advanced healthcare data warehousing and adaptive data architectures, they are helping their customers see trends, devise plans, and implement changes to better serve patients. They help hospitals assess risks, address treatment disparities, and analyze electronic medical record data. Their just in time, Late-Binding Data Warehouse platform and analytic applications aggregate data for over 30 million patients and support 1,900 client hospitals and clinics and major health insurance companies.

Health Catalyst's sophisticated analytic applications will continue to shed new light on how best to deliver health care that results in better patient experiences, improved health of populations, and reduced cost. As healthcare continues to change, new realities will represent more opportunities for the firm. One area of opportunity is with geospatial visualization and analytics. By geo-enabling its predictive models and presenting those model outcomes in a map-centric and interactive user interface, they will improve their service offerings to both hospital-centric users, both staff and strategic management, as well as payer groups.

Like many of our forward-looking clients, Health Catalyst had a desire to align the capabilities of today's location technology with current and future marketplace needs. We geo-enabled their predictive models and presented those model outcomes in a map-centric web application in ArcGIS Online. Using the new Web AppBuilder within ArcGIS Online we were able to quickly attach a workflow-specific Network Optimization tool to enhance the user's experience as they analyzed different network coverage scenarios. ArcGIS Online also provided easy access to key performance factors from Tapestry data as part of the Business Analyst Online services.

The interactive user interface of ArcGIS Online improves the service offering to both hospital-centric users as well as payer groups. Together this resulted in an automated method of defining the service areas. Leveraging GIS helped identify the exact population for which health coverage can be provided. Population characteristics from various external source data was also explored.

Through the adoption of GIS location technology, Health Catalyst has derived a better understanding of their healthcare clients, enrolled patients, and eligible payer groups with ArcGIS Online.
